This past March, the tricolor manufacturer had already presented a first glimpse of the 208 FE HYmotion at Geneva. In Switzerland, the car was on display in model form, it will be well represented as a concept on the occasion of the German Biennial which opens in two weeks.
For several years, we know the Peugeot Hybrid4 technology, a hybrid diesel engine / electric, but its 208 HYmotion FE (for Fuel Economy and Efficiency Fun) tricolor brand opts for a gasoline / electric system.
As the first study released in March, the objective of Peugeot engineers was to provide a simple and environmentally friendly vehicle but also able to have a worthy of a GTi acceleration. For this concept and its latest engine, Peugeot has benefited from the experience gained in Peugeot Sport endurance.
Under the hood, the 208 HYmotion FE is equipped three-cylinder petrol engine brand whose capacity is pushed to the 1.2 power maintained at 68 horses. This block has undergone several changes as the cycle optimization, reducing friction losses or thermal management.
This engine is mated to an electric motor powered by a battery directly from the development of the 908 HYbrid4. The battery is recharged during phases of braking or deceleration. This lithium-ion battery weighing 25 kilos is installed with the fuel tank on a cradle which is screwed in the car at the base of the rear seat.
In terms of performance, the exercise of the 0 to 100 km / h is achieved in 8 seconds while the combined fuel consumption is announced by Peugeot to 2.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions are estimated at 49 grams per kilometer .
In addition to this new engine, the French manufacturer has also worked on the aerodynamics (25% gain on the Cx) and the mass (20% decrease) always with the aim of reducing fuel consumption.

Reverse Logic to Downsizing
For its part, the engine has been reworked in a reverse to that advocated reducing logic capacity, seeing his range of 1.0 l to 1.2 l in order to increase its torque by 25%. This block also saw Miller cycle compression ratio range of 11:1 to 16:1 and reduced friction losses by 40% thanks to a special treatment of its moving parts, they also reduced. That allows a reduction in consumption of heat for 10%.
Mechanical gearbox system, maintained by Peugeot for its high performance, has also seen its losses by reducing friction with a special coating (Tungsten Carbide – Chrome) offered its gears. Finally, special lubricants developed by Total, the image of a transmission oil grade 75W at very high viscosity index, provide fuel savings of 3%.
Last but not least, the aerodynamics of the concept HYmotion FE was sharpened to reduce its drag coefficient of 25% to see it go under 0.25. He took it to remove the disturbing elements of the body, its butcher unneeded air inlets and graft a new rear part cutaway equipped with an exhaust fan. In short, nothing was left to chance on this 208 not quite like the others, whose performance did nothing about very ordinary. But Peugeot is the most difficult to do this: the decline prowess models affordable series. And this is another challenge altogether.
